Description:

In this modern world, you have to be ready to move for work, and Bob Carey thought he was able to live anywhere. At least until he met Florida that is, which it turns out is a lot more than Miami and Disney. Now thanks to an untimely flaming boat-related death and some office politics he finds himself in Jacksonville tasked with making a new life. The young environmental lawyer has a lot to learn about his new town, and the new people in his life like his oddball researcher Steve, his new girlfriend Sarah and most of all his new clients. What he finds will make him realize that the Florida Man headlines he used to enjoy don't explain even a portion of how weird the Sunshine State can truly be.

Ray's thoughts:

My first review of a book I was offered by an author and I am beyond thankful, but this will not influence my opinion on this book.

After a promising prologue we get to know our protaognist, Bob Carey. He is a smart and yet empathetic lawyer (sounds like a fable, I know) and as a reader I've grown a fondness for him. He is a good, strong and kinda goofy dude, a best buddy type person, which made reading this story easier and more fun. The side characters are each goofy in their own ways and add a lot of charm to the story, especially his researcher Steve, who couldn't give a flying f' regarding his employer's rules most of the time.

The romance sub plot felt natural, didn't distract from the main plot and bled wonderfully into it. The story is told from different perspectives and all narrative strands that do not end in an abrupt death come together in a truly divine finale. As an attentive reader, I was also pleased that I found no errors whatsoever.

The highlight of the book and something I have not witnessed in all these years is the extremely sarcastic and cynical narrator. Even during the most suspenseful moments of the story, he made me giggle.

Conclusion:

Cult of the Gator God is an amazing book! A mixture of various genres, filled with lots of sarcasm, excitement, relatable characters and fun. I recommend this book to anyone who is ready for a different kind of adventure, anyone who just wants to be surprised and entertained and anyone who is fascinated by the Florida Man headlines. I am looking forward to the next works of the author and hope that he raises the bar some more.
